What's been happening?

Hi folks

We have some pretty exciting news to announce:

Our new album Planet Junkie is FINALLY available on pre-order as of today!

We are taking orders on our official website ONLY for now!

Full album release date is planned for September 20th, although the intricacies of the manufacturing process (and the fact that we are cutting it VERY short on the production side of things!) might mean that we could run a few days late on our planned schedule but fear not the full physical record WILL be with you before September ends!

You can now listen to most of the songs that will be featured on the album (we like to keep some of the suspense alive he he), before you decide to part with your hard-earned cash and grab yourselves a copy of the record – if you reckon we’ve done a good enough job that is!

On behalf of the ‘regular’ Drifting Sun team (Mathieu Spaeter on guitars, my humble self on keyboards, Manu Michael on bass, and Will Jones on drums), we are very pleased to say it has been an immense pleasure for us working with many talented musicians on this album, and we would like to take this opportunity to say a big thank you to all those who have put their mark on the songs and brought their magic in to create this piece of work we’re so proud to present to you today:

Marc Atkinson (Riversea/Moon Halo) on the vocals – a talented artist and a real gent, pleasure to work with you!

Colin Mold (Karnataka) on the vocals – thank you so much for being able to produce such great vocals whilst you had to deal with the pressure of your own house move! (I’m next!)

Joshua Corum (Head With Wings) on the vocals – we bickered, we fought our corner many a time, all in the interest of getting the best out of those damn tunes… and glad to say you came up with something pretty exceptional with your vocals!

Eric Bouillette (The Room/Nine Skies… and many more!) on the violin – you gave us great emotional performances, so I forgive you for not remembering me when we first met and jammed together 30 years ago!

Sarah Skinner (Red Dirt Skinners) on the saxophone – thanks for the tasty solos!

Ben Bell (Gandalf’s Fist) on the Hammond organ – growling licks and groovy tone, what more could we have asked for?

Conrad Cheng on the clarinet – cheers buddy for your sweet part in Everlasting Creed, it’s brought a great colour to the tune!

We must also give credit to the amazing designers who created beautiful artwork for us:

Karen Koski for the awesome album cover – please do get back to being a designer, your work is fabulous

Darcy Kelly-Laviolette for her equally mind-blowing art on the 3 singles – thank you so much for dazzling us with these 3 pieces of awesome work, and with the TINY deadline we gave you, it was no small feat on your part!

Brian Watson for the fab designs which you will discover on the accompanying lyric pages – thank you for adding that great touch to our lyric pages!

The bulk of the mixing and mastering work was handled masterfully (no pun intended) by our skillful sound engineer Jon ‘no pressure’ Huxtable, who runs a neat and tight ship from his Scottish den at Smallfishrecordings!

… whilst Joshua’s vocals were produced and engineered beautifully by Steven Hill at Bird’s Eyes studios in West Haven, CT – thanks to both of you, your clear vision of our music has brought a lot to the songs and our sound!

I also want to thank my friends Stefan Hepe, Andy and Chris Martini for their invaluable help sorting out our website, even though that is an admission that I am a dummy when it comes to internet stuff haha my secret is out now!

June 2018
Hello folks! It has been a while since we last posted any news of the band here… suffice to say 2018 hasn’t been to kind to us, but we are back now with a brand new single coming out very soon, a cracking tune which will feature in our upcoming new album (as yet undisclosed… let’s keep the suspense up for another few months!). The single also contains a track that won’t be on the new album, aka a bonus track! Check it out on our Bandcamp page just before Christmas, for a very festive – though not christmassy at all, don’t worry – release (and in the nick of time too!)… happy holidays to you all, we look forward to seeing you in the new year for more exciting musical adventures!

June 2018

New Drifting Sun single is now out, featuring previously unreleased track ‘Atlantis’ (as it says on the attached cover!)… a great tune for a quid, you can’t beat that, so download it now and we’ll be pleased as punch!

May 2018

March 2018

Today, March 7th, I lost a father and a friend… the memories of the journey we made together during all those long years will stay with me forever… you now live in my memory as I live in yours, you are gone but you will never be forgotten…. Thank you for everything and may you rest in peace, Dad x

Check out this great review published last month in French prog mag Amarock Magazine, courtesy of Daniel Sebon, thanks for the kind words!

Great review of our 2016 album Safe Asylum in German magazine Empire, which was recently sent to us by Michael Dambeck, thanks for the great review Mike!
As we have no direct link, here is the review itself (for you all German lovers… the rest can use google translator, just like we do!!!):

February 2018

Please check out this very cool review of Twilight in the Classic Rock Society magazine, courtesy of Miles Bartaby, cheers for the kind words Miles!

A massive thank you to the entire team of IO Pages magazine in the Netherlands, for giving us such fantastic ratings on our album Twilight in 2017! We want to make a special mention to Wilco Barg and Erik Fraanje for their undying support of the band… cheers guys!

Big news on the DS front! Our eponymous debut album will soon be re-issued on CD, in jewel case format with a 12-page booklet. The album will ship from March 15th, 2018, but we are now taking pre-orders!

We have just set up a Drifting Sun discussion group on Facebook. Our group, aptly named Drifting Sun HQ, is now the official place for fans to chat about us (even behind our backs… we’re not fussed, as long as it’s fun banter!).
Please join us and feel free to post your questions, bits of news, talks about your fave DS tunes (or about other prog bands), whatever you feel like talking about really… let’s make it a lively group to be part of!

Just came across this nice review of Twilight in the latest issue of Progression Magazine in the US of A, courtesy of Nick Tate – thanks for the exposure!
As we don’t have an actual link for the review, here’s what it says:
On latest melodic outing Twilight, veteran U.K. collective Drifting Sun makes a compositionally sure-handed step forward on eight pieces bearing reassuringly reliable prog-rock motifs without sounding overtly derivative. Most tracks are wisely built around the emotively urgent vocals of singer-lyricist Peter Falconer, neatly framed by composer/keyboardist Pat Sanders’ virtuosic synth work and Steve Hackett-like guitar leads from newcomer Mathieu Spaeter. Yes, Drifting Sun draws substantially from second-wave neoprog sonorities but this (loosely based) thematic rumination on light vs. dark/day vs. night/death vs. life possesses decidedly contemporary flair. Highpoints include the nine-minute title track, which opens the album with a tricky/widdly synthesizer riff and forthright vocal harmony, giving way to a propulsive prog-rock workout featuring prodigious changeups in mood and pacing. “Mystery of Lies” plays like a tribute to Hackett, featuring Spaeter’s heavy-sustain guitar melody and a sumptuous classical guitar/vocal interlude. “Summer Skies” showcases Sanders’ classical piano training and is topped by Beach Boys-like harmonies that would make both Tony Banks and Brian Wilson take notice. Eight-minute closer “Remain” unfolds much like the opener, providing ample room at midpoint for gloriously proggy instrumental romps via piano, guitar and synths.

December 2017

We want to say a big thank you to Henri Strik for his amazing review of Twilight in Background Magazine in the Netherlands! ‘Sometimes words can hardly describe what you feel when you listen to an amazing sounding album. And this is the case when I listened all the way through this excellent album for many times the last couple of weeks.’
A must read!

This review from the Arlequins camp in Italia, escaped our radar… how did that happen? Who knows! But that’s now fixed… enjoy!!

Another excellent review of Twilight, from Empire Magazine in Germany…. wunderbar and a warm thank you to Martin Dambeck for his kind words!

Magazin für anspruchsvolle Rockmusik

Hello Proggers! This cool DS interview has just been published in the latest issue of IO Pages in the Netherlands, courtesy of Huis Schemert and Wilco Brag… a great read? We certainly think so! (especially for those who can speak Dutch!!)

With Christmas fast approaching, a bunch of us have teamed up to concoct a festive song entitled ‘Wake Up’ which was released as part of an EP on December 1st.
Wake Up features Colin Tench (Corvus Stone), Gareth Cole (Mike Kershaw, Tom Slatter), Ben Bell (Patchwork Cacophony, Gandalf’s Fist), Stefan Hepe (Gandalf’s Fist), Peter Falconer, Pat Sanders and Manu Michael (Drifting Sun). The song was mixed and mastered by Jon Huxtable at Smallfish Studios, Scotland.
Also included in the EP are 7 songs previously recorded by the musicians who contributed to the making of ‘Wake Up’. All the profits from the sales will go to TIERHILFE SAUERLAND E. V.
Barbara Hellekes, CEO of the animal welfare organisation said “We’re over the moon about this! Winter is coming, and it’s really hard to get the poor souls through the winter, especially in Hungary and Greece, where we support and help privately organised shelters in keeping the streets free of stray dogs, trying to find them a forever home”
We, Shits ‘n Giggles, take this opportunity to thank everyone who has taken up their valuable time to bring their contribution to this EP to help make this release possible, and we hope that the charity organization we have chosen will benefit greatly from the generosity of the people who donate to their cause, cheers everyone and Merry Christmas to all!

November cometh, Christmas is nearly upon us (or looming dangerously, depending on how you feel about it!)… … and in the ‘you can’t win ’em all’ section, we just came across this rather average chronicle of Twilight from Whiskey Soda fanzine in Germany… any publicity is good publicity!

Thank you very much for the kind words, Ziggy!

Please take a few minutes to read Esther’s review of Twilight in her blog (with the aid of Google translator if, like me, you don’t speak Dutch!)… very fine words for a very fine review indeed, thanks Esther!

March, 2017

With news and reviews from the band getting a little few and far between, you must all be wondering if we might be busy getting a new album ready for release? Well, you are right to think so, but we are not saying anymore at this stage… watch this space for more good news in the next few months In the meantime, we have recently come across some great reviews of our second album On the Rebound, which, as you will know by now (cos we have been babbling about it long enough!), was recently re-released as a remixed and remastered edition, along with brand new artwork! By the way the album is available for streaming (and purchasing!) from our site right here, or on our Bandcamp page, whichever you favour most… as long as you get your copy of it!! And here are the recent reviews of OTR, one from our friend Tony Colvill from The Progressive Aspect in the UK, and one from Henri Strik from Background Magazine in the Netherlands. We thank you both warmly for taking the time to pen these kind words about the album, and hope you had as much fun playing them as we had painstakingly rebuilding the entire record from scratch!

October, 2016

Coming up this month: some very high praise for Safe Asylum, from Nick Tate of Progression Magazine in the US of A… that’s right!
Review listed below for you guys… worth a read? We at the DS headquarters should bloody well think it is
This British studio collective has been active since the 1990s with a revolving door of musicians. But Drifting Sun’s latest iteration is its strongest, offering much to enjoy for fans of third-wave progressive acts that craft dynamic compositions around strong melodies and prodigious chops. Singer Peter Falconer is the star of the show here with a range that flows easily between coquettish Freddy Mercury-esque falsetto, James LaBrie-like operatic histrionics and the over-the- top shrieking a la Peter Hammill. Most tracks are (wisely) built around his strong pipes, with soaring fretwork from Dan Storey and sumptuous keyboard runs courtesy of Pat Sanders. From hard-rocking epic opener “King of Hearts” these guys establish undeniable prog-rock cred, serving up a deftly constructed mix of shifting meters and stylistic contrasts from acoustic folk to grinding metal. Standouts include “The Hidden Truth” evoking a marriage of Yes and Transatlantic, Queen-like ballad “Gods” plus baroque-fueled majestic rocker “Alice,” featuring acoustic guitar, piano, strings, and lush melody lines drawing variously from Bach, the Beatles and Broadway.

Check out this cool review in legendary Italian Prog Magazine Arlequins, courtesy of Valentino Butti. Grazie mille for your kind words, Valentino!

Take a few minutes to read Aaron Emerson’s fantastic review of Safe in GetYourRockOut magazine… an absolute must!!

Thomas Szirmay has done it again! Check out this cracking review of On the Rebound – which was recently re-released as a brand new remixed and remastered CD – now out in Prog Archives…. not to be missed! Thank you again so much Thomas for your passion about our music, it shines through your words!

Soon to be published, a cool review from the Classic Rock Society, courtesy of Miles Bartaby, well worth a read in my ‘umble opinion
Here’s the review, in case you miss it when it comes out!
Drifting Sun began in the ‘90s with French national and main songwriter Pat Sanders on Keyboards and Manu Michael on bass. After their On The Rebound album in 1998 the band went on a lengthy hiatus before returning last year with Trip The Life Fantastic. Safe Asylum, released earlier this year, is the second album since the re-emergence (fourth overall) and sees Sanders and Michael joined by Peter Falconer on vocals, Dan Storey on guitars, and Will Johns on drums.
Musically they are definitely influenced by the ‘80s ‘neo-prog’ bands with Storey’s stylish guitar playing adding plenty of punch to their sound. Sanders’ keyboards stand out too and Falconer’s vocals fit perfectly making this a very strong album. The interplay between guitar and keyboards is cleverly constructed and beautifully executed, particularly on the epic Intruder, which is a real highlight here.
Whereas Trip The Life Fantastic showed the lighter side of the band this release has a much darker edge with the material given room to expand and shows they are capable of a range of musical styles. Both albums are great but personally I favour this one.

Take a few minutes to read Aaron Emerson’s fantastic review of Safe in GetYourRockOut magazine… an absolute must!!

Great News! The all-new, remixed and remastered edition of our second album ‘On the Rebound’ is now available on CD! This is more than just another remastered release, we literally stripped the original recording down to basics and painstakingly rebuilt it to give it a new lease of life… the result? Find out in our ‘Music’ tab!

Short, but sweet, review of Safe in the Cosmos Music website, a must read for all our French-speaking fans out there

And another great review of Safe from Background Magazine, courtesy of our friend Henri Strik, cheers buddy for the kind words!
